A Promise to the Future, USA, 2019

Our first ever installation, ‘DearTomorrow: A Promise to the Future’, invited visitors to immerse themselves in letters, messages, and stories from our global collection.

The Story

Taking place at the Solutions House on Governor’s Island in New York City in 2019, the installation explored emotional responses to our changing climate from around the world. Visitors were invited to consider their connection to the future, the impacts of climate change, the value of nature, and the power of legacy, love, and action.

The Outcome

We gathered hundreds of varied stories of connection, care, and climate change from our collection, creating an immersive and reflective experience in the gallery. A soundtrack of real people reading their messages accompanied the visual experience — take a listen below:

‘A Promise to the Future’ was our first foray into the real world, breathing life into our project for the first time. Since 2019 DearTomorrow has gone from strength to strength, creating immersive experiences and collaborative partnerships across the world.

The Human Impacts Institute (HII) is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to fostering environmental justice, sustainability, and community engagement through innovative educational programs, creative communication strategies, and community-driven environmental initiatives. By integrating arts and culture into its approach, HII aims to inspire diverse communities to take action and advocate for equitable environmental policies and practices, ensuring a healthier, more sustainable future for all. Their mission is to build a global cultural movement to inspire BIG, BOLD, and BEAUTIFUL climate action.

Featured Artists

Tara DePorte is a visual artist and founder of Human Impacts Institute, and a leading voice in climate arts. She collaborated with DearTomorrow to create our first experiential exhibit design.

Lemon Guo is a sound artist who created the 46-minute soundscape that immersed visitors in the feelings and words of the letter writers.
